| Elämä Yhdysvaltalainen dekkarikirjailija Erle Stanley Gardner on syntynyt 17.6.1889 Maldenissa, Massachusettissa Yhdysvalloissa ja kuollut 11.3.1970 Temeculassa, Kaliforniassa. Isä oli kaivosinsinööri, joka työnsä takia joutui usein muuttamaan asuinpaikkakuntaa. Gardner kävi koulua Palo Altossa Kaliforniassa ja meni pian sen jälkeen konekirjoittajaksi asianajotoimistoon Oxnardissa. Samalla hän opiskeli lakia. Hänet hyväksyttiin asianajajaksi 1911. Seitsemän vuotta myöhemin hän luopui asianajotehtävistä ja ryhtyi myymään autonrenkaita. Vuonna 1921 Gardner aloitti uudestaan asianajajana Venturassa ja alkoi myös pian sen jälkeen kirjoittaa jännityskertomuksia viihdelukemistoihin. Ensimmäinen julkaistiin 1923, ja menestys oli hyvä. Vuosina 1923-1932 Gardner julkaisikin useita satoja rikoskertomuksia eri lehdissä ja useilla tekijännimillä. Gardneria pidetäänkin yhtenä pulp-kirjallisuuden kuninkaista. Gardnerin ensimmäinen rikosromaani The Case of the Velvet Claws ilmestyi 1933 (suom. Murhaajan ääni, 1949). Sen päähenkilö on asianajaja Perry Mason, jolla on apunaan kaunis sihteeri Della Street ja yksityisetsivä Paul Drake, joka tekee likaisen työn ja yleinen syyttäjä Hamilton Burger, Masonin vastapuoli oikeudessa. Parhaiten Gardner tunnetaankin Perry Mason -dekkareistaan. Hän kirjoitti kaikkiaan 83 Perry Mason -dekkaria sekä lukuisia muita dekkareita niin omalla nimellään kuin lukuisilla salanimillään. Kirjailijan salanimistä tunnetuin on A. A. Fair, jolla nimellä hän julkaisi 29 dekkaria, jotka kertovat yksityisetsiväpari Donald Lamista ja Bertha Coolista. Osa näistä on julkaistu suomeksi Erle Stanley Gardnerin tekijänimellä. Lam&Cool -sarjan teoksista on suomennettu mm. Pässinpäät kuolevat perjantaisin (1944, suom. 1961) ja Buddhien arvoitus (1958, suom. 1959). Lisäksi Gardner kirjoitti yhdeksän teosta, joiden päähenkilö on pikkukaupungin syyttäjänä toimiva Doug Selby. Niistä ensimmäinen The D.A. Calls it Murder, ilmestyi vuonna 1937. Kaiken kaikkiaan Gardner kirjoitti 128 dekkaria, 10 jännitysnovellikoelmaa, kolme muuta novellikokoelmaa sekä 17 muuta teosta. Maatilallaan Temeculassa Kaliforniassa Gardnerilla oli parhaina aikoinaan kuusi sihteeriä, joille hän saneli tekstinsä, sekä runsaasti muuta apuhenkilökuntaa. Vuodesta 1930 hänen ykkössihteerinän oli Agnes Jean Bethell,jonka kanssa hän meni naimisiin 1968. Gardner on kirjoittanut myös nimimerkillä A. A. Fair, Carleton Kendrake ja Charles J. Kenny. Erle Stanley Gardner on yksi historian tuotteliaimmista dekkarikirjailijoista. Hänen teoksiaan on myyty pelkästään Yhdysvalloissta yli 200 miljoonaa kappaletta ja hänen kirjojaan on käännetty yli 30 kielelle. Gardnerin teosten pohjalta on tehty lukuisia elokuvia ja tv-sarjoja sekä kuunnelmia. Radiossa Perry Mason seikkaili vuosina 1943-1955 ja omassa televisiosarjassaan vuosina 1957-1966 sekä 1973-1974. Mystery Writers of America palkitsi Gardnerin vuonna 1952 Edgar Alla Poe -palkinnolla ja Grand Master -palkinnon hän sai vuonna 1961. Gardnerin kuoltua Thomas Chastain on jatkanut Perry Masonista kertovien teosten kirjoittamista mm. teoksilla Perry Mason ja murhavyyhti (suom. 1990) ja Perry Mason ja poltettu testamentti (suom. 1992).
